This is a family favorite and the key to making the dish special is the homemade noodle recipe that requires a special spittle maker. Here’s what one looks like: http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B00004UE89/002-0368106-2484075
But for a shortcut, you can buy spaetzle (comes in a box, like pasta) to serve with the chicken. I like to use chicken breasts instead of chicken pieces and cut them up into bite sized pieces (once cooked), and mix with noodles or spaetzle as one dish. Alternatively, you can serve the noodles along side the chicken pieces.
CHICKEN -
2 cut up chickens
1 large onion
1 stick of margarine
2 tablespoons of paprika
1 teaspoon of salt
Dash of pepper
1 cup of chicken broth
2 tablespoons of flour
1 cup of sour cream
Mix onion, melted butter, paprika, salt, pepper and water. Spoon into baking dish. Put chicken parts (or a few boneless chicken breasts) on top of mixture and turn to coat pieces. Bake uncovered for 1 hour in a 400 degree oven. Remove chicken from pan. Thicken pan mixture with 2 tablespoons of flour. Add 1 cup of sour cream to make gravy.
HOMEMADE NOODLES
4 cups of flour
1 cup of milk
6 beaten eggs
Mix all ingredients. Use spaetzle maker and place spaetzle in boiler water. When water returns to a boil, cook 15 minutes. Drain and rinse with warm water. Stir in 2 tablespoons of melted butter.
